Guard Your Heart

By Kameisha Kirton

When I initially heard the theme "Guard Your Heart", I started thinking of reasons why it would be important for the heart to be guarded. My mind initially went to Proverbs 4:23 - "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life" however, I was then also drawn to another important reason why we should guard our hearts and it is found within 1 Samuel 16:7. Part of this scripture states "for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart". The heart is linked closely to our soul. In the bible, we hear phrases like "Mary pondered these things in her heart"; this is not our physical heart that pumps blood but rather can be seen as where we store our emotions, our thoughts and our motives. If this is the area that God looks on, then it is of utmost importance that we do our best to guard it. So it begs the question, what are we guarding our hearts from? We should seek to guard our hearts from all manner of evil, malice and unforgiveness. A good way to do this is found in Philippians 4:8 - "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of a good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things". We should seek daily to cultivate and maintain a heart that pleases God. This includes feeding our soul with scriptures and songs, ensuring we stay prayed up and spending quality time with God. By doing this, God who sees our hearts, (knowing the true reason behind why we're doing what we're doing) can say, this is my son or daughter, in whom I am well pleased.
